What’s Google Search Console?
Search Console is the new name for the previous Google Webmaster Tools service, a very useful set of tools for your business’ online success for several reasons:
- Gives you a deep diagnosis of your website performance, errors and issues that you need to work on.
- Helps you to understand your visitors better and align your online strategy to them.
- Makes you more aware as you can set up alerts to be notified when something important happens.

Why is it important?
Hmm ok, the generics are clear but you may still be wondering how will it impact your business.
So, Google Search Console is a great toolset that allows you to see how Google (as a search engine) views your site in terms of issues such as links, speed, keywords used to access your site, among many others. Regarding SEO, all this information is crucial if you want to have a healthy site, track external impact and learn how to improve it.
The thing is that it can be complicated to understand but some of the various features integrated within Search Console are:
- Adding a sitemap
A sitemap is an XML file that lists the URLs of your website along with additional metadata about each one (when it was last updated, how often it usually changes and how important it is compared to other URLs in the site) so that search engines can crawl the site more intelligently.
Sitemaps are specially important if your site is very complex and has a large number of pages, has a large archive of content pages that are not well linked to each other or it’s new and has few backlinks.
- Ensure that critical content is not blocked by robots.txt
Robots.txt is a text file that informs search engines whether they can access certain parts of your website or not. It is important to verify that it is properly set up, because otherwise your website or some parts of it may not appear in search engine results page.
- Submit for indexing
When updating your site, you can use Search Console to get your changes indexed by Google manually. This will allow any updates to appear in search results as soon as possible and not rely on automatic indexing, which may take longer.
